Pure magnesium is often used in foundry applications to convert base iron into ductile iron (also known as cast iron with nodular graphite) through a process known as the Fischer converter process. Magnesium is incorporated into the molten metal for desulfurization. Since formation of nodular graphite is only possible in nearly sulfur-free melts, the quantity of magnesium added to the melt must be proportional to the amount of sulfur contained in the base iron, which is why Luxfer Magtech offers pure magnesium in a variety of weights.
A variety of cut, uncoated, pure magnesium pieces ranging in size from ¼-pound to 15 pounds are available.
Luxfer Magtech also offers magnesium cut pieces, which have been covered with a refractory coating. These cut, coated magnesium pieces are available in a range of weights from one pound to eight pounds.
